Notably, the number of future of work-related patent applications in the mining industry was 115 in Q1 2024, versus 190 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 46% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that JFE filed the most future of work patents within the mining industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 17 future of work-related patents in the quarter, compared with 32 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Kobe Steel with 16 future of work patent filings, China Baowu Steel Group (8 filings), and ArcelorMittal (6 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 56% share of total patent filings
The largest share of future of work related patent filings in the mining industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 56%, followed by Japan (10%) and the US (6%). The share represented by China was 25% lower than the 81% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
