The top five companies accounted for 53% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Mitsui Mining & Smelting filed the most batteries patents within the mining industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 14 batteries-related patents in the quarter, compared with 16 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Qazaqstan Investment Corp with 9 batteries patent filings, Toyo Seikan Group (7 filings), and JFE (7 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by Japan with a 30% share of total patent filings
The largest share of batteries related patent filings in the mining industry in Q1 2024 was in Japan with 30%, followed by China (22%) and the US (11%). The share represented by Japan was 6% higher than the 23% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
